Canada is a relatively young nation whose recorded history goes back less than 500 years. When the European explorers and settlers arrived,Canada was already populated by a diverse range of aboriginal peoples, indians and inuit, who arethought to have arrived from Asia 10,000 - 3,000 years ago by grossing a land bridge formed batween siberia and alaska during the last Ice age.
It is believed that the ancestors of Canadian inuit were inland hunters who adapted thier lifestyle to new conditions. Some of them lived near the cost and began to hunt seal and walruses.Their main diet consisted of marine mammals and fish.Other never went to sea but hunted game in nearby ares.
At one time, the inuit were referred to by the derogatory team "Eskimo":today they are pround to be called inuit.
The traditional dwelling where the inuit lived used to be an "Ingloo" - a dome-sharped house built with block of ice.The inuit travelled in a sledge pulled by dogs and thier main weapon was the harpoon.
For many centuries , the Canadian inuit lived in nearlu total isolation.Only at the beginning of the 19th century were there more permanent trading relations with whale hunters and fur merchants.
Nowadays, the majority of the inuit live in some 28 remote communities scattered across the barren landscape of the northern shores of their new territorial mainland and Arctic islands. The traditional life of Canada`s inuit is changing a lot.The dog-sledge has been largely replaced by snow-mobiles,cars and trucks. Some have central heating, electricity and plumbring systems in their buildings;children go to school:and health service is provided by the government.
In the 20th century airfields, weather stations and early warning radar wtations were built across Canada`s Nortern territories.Soon oil and gas were found in the North and more people moved to this region.
Moder life, however, has not olways been a blessing for Canada`s inuit. The have to adapt to life in a advanced industial society while at the same time trying to preserve thier traditional social and celtural roots.
