CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS
By R. Kipling
...They never worked on Sundays, but shaved and washed themselves. Disco explained to Harvey the meaning of the sea map and shoved him the "cod" places. There were many long talks on the schooner on stormy days, when they lay or sat in their cabins.Disco spoke of fishing voyages for whales; of great she-whales killed near their young. He told about the death agonies of these huge whales on the black seas and blood that rose forty feet in the air; of boats smashed to pieces-wonderful tales all true.
Long Jack liked ghost stories. He told them of hidden treasures of Fire Island that were watched by the spirits of Captain Kidd`s men; of ships that sailed in the fog straight over a town; Tom Platt told them about the manof-war where he had been a sailor. He told about storms and cold, about weather so cold that two hundred men were busy night and day chopping the ice everywhere on the boat.
Tom Platt had no use for steams. He said it was a good invention in theme of peace, but he waited hopefully for the day when sails would come bask again on ten-thousand-ton ships.
Manuel`s talk was slow and gentle-all about pretty girls in Spain washing clothes in streams by moonlight. He told legends of heroes, and tales of strange dances or fights in the cold northern ports.
The cook usually did not take part in these conversations. He spoke only when it was absolutely necessary, but sometimes he would speak in broken English for an hour at a time. Then he told them about his mother and her stories of life far to the south where water never froze. And he said that when he died, his soul would go to lie down on the warm white sand with palm-trees waving above. That seemed to the boys a very strange idea for a man who had never seen a palm-tree in his life.
There were days of fine weather, of fishing, hard work and excitement. Then the fog covered everything again, and they anchored, surrounded by the ringing of unseen bells. At such times there was not much fishing, but boat men boat from time to time in fog and exchanged news.
