wasn't sleeping (не спал) - не спал в тот конкретный момент. Возможно, он спал почти всё время до прихода отца и даже лёг сразу после, но вот в конкретный момент прихода папы домой - не спал (и делал свою домашнюю работу).

13. When we were in the country last summer, I went to the wood one day. In the wood I found a little fox cub. It could not run. It injured its leg. I decided to help the cub. I brought it home. Every day I fed it and took care of it. I was doing it the whole summer. Now the fox cub is quite well. It left my house. It lives in the woods again.
