A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that develops over the warm surface of the ocean and is accompanied by heavy rainfall, squalls and thunderstorms. It occurs when moist, warm air comes in contact with a cold, large volume of atmospheric masses. This creates a vortex over the ocean, with an eye in the centre, where the weather is warm and calm, while the winds blow around with a speed of 117 km/h or more.

All hurricanes come from the sea, but once they hit land they disperse rather quickly, causing considerable damage before they do so.
