Theatre is one of the oldest forms of entertainment. In the Middle Ages, early dramas were often STAGED and PLAYED in churches. For example, mystery plays told the Bible stories in a RELIGIOUS way. The first DRAMA theatres were built in the times of  Shakespeare. These theatres were UNCOVERED, it wasn`t  until the late 1600`s that theatres were roofed. Many early plays were set in exotic locations. But in the last 100 years, THE ENGLISH have written more about ordinary characters and situations.
