Nowadays shopping has become more exciting than it used to be some decades ago. People do a lot of shopping or at least window-shopping every weekend. Quite wealthy people buy expensive things at boutiques or shopping malls. Others usually shop around to find a good bargain and buy things at the discount stores, at the market or department stores.
Shopping for food is part of our everyday life and the majority of people prefer buying food at the supermarket. Surely, supermarkets have become popular with customers because they are well-stocked with plenty of food and you can buy practically all you need under one roof. The goods are pre-packaged and have clearly marked prices on them. They are displayed on counters, shelves, racks, in reach-in fridges, freezers or in trolleys. Though the staff are not always polite or helpful there, reasonable prices, excellent assortment of goods and long opening hours can explain the popularity of such shops. Besides, you save a lot of time as supermarkets are equipped with numerous checkouts and you don’t have to stand in long queues. Moreover, supermarkets offer various discounts and money-off coupons which seem very tempting for customers.
On the other hand, in our town small corner shops are still numerous. They usually deal in certain goods and can be called specialized shops. The GROCER’S, for example, offers a variety of products like cartons of juice, bottles of oil and ketchup; jars of pickled vegetables; bags of flour; pasta and spices; packets of tea and lump sugar; jars of instant coffee or coffee beans. The BUTCHER’S deals in different kinds of meat such as pork, beef, mutton, veal, chicken or turkey not to mention minced meat and smoked meat like ham, bacon, sausage and chain-sausages. At the FISHMONGER’S there is a wide choice of fresh, frozen, salted, smoked, tinned fish, seafood and red caviar. If we’ve run out of bread, we go to the BAKER’S and buy a loaf of white or brown bread; some buns and rolls; crispbreads and biscuits. At the DAIRY SHOP we usually buy cartons of milk and sour cream, yoghurt, cheese, packets of butter and cottage cheese. The CONFECTIONER’S always has a good assortment of pastries, chocolates, boxes of marshmallows, lollipops and fruit drops; toffees, doughnuts and cheesecakes. If we are short of fresh vegetables and fruit we usually go to the GREENGROCER’S.
