1. (According to the Webster's dictionary) Hardware means 1) ware made of metal or 2) major items of equipment or their components used for a particular purpose such as a) military equipment and b) the physical components of a vehicle or an apparatus.
2. There are 4 groups of hardware: 1) input hardware; 2) processing hardware; 3) output hardware; 4) storage hardware.
3. Input hardware is used to input raw data such as text, images and audio recordings. For example, a keyboard or a microphone.
4. The computer mouse was designed to increase computer usability.
5. Processing is the core function of a computer. It is the stage where the raw data is transformed into information. The most common components of processing hardware are the Central Processing Unit (CPU, the 'brain' of a PC) and main memory.
6. The storage hardware consists of components that store and retain data temporary or permanently. There are 2 types of storage devices: a primary storage (RAM) and a secondary storage (hard drive) which can be removable, internal or external.
7. A modem is a hardware device that connects a computer or a router to a network so that a user can communicate with other people. But you can still get an access to the internet without a modem. You will need a network card, a dedicated line and an internet provider. Besides, you can use Wi-Fi network or a cell phone connected to your PC.
