Несколько лет назад мне пришлось плыть зимой на теплоходе из Батуми на
север. После Туапсе теплоход ушел в открытое море, чтобы обойти ледяной
шторм, бушевавший у берегов Новороссийска.
Все же шторм захватил
нас крылом. Волчьим воем пели снасти. Лицо резала колючая снежная крупа.
Ветер стремительно проносил над мачтами черные тучи. Они казались
обрывками тьмы.

На рассвете я проснулся от тишины. Монотонно
гудела машина. Я вышел на палубу. Шторм стих. В необыкновенной ясности
всходило солнце.

Впереди, в голубоватой светящейся мгле,
медленно вырастали из моря очертания желтых гор, освещенных низкими, но
яркими лучами. Это был Крым, но я не сразу узнал его. Он показался мне
огромным островом, тонущим в утренней синеве.
Впервые я увидел
из морской дали весь Крым, весь торжественный разворот его берегов от мыса Фиолента до Карадага

Мы подходили к берегам, расцвеченным сухими и резкими красками
крымской зимы. Уже пылали ржавчиной виноградники, уже видны были
покрытые снегом вершины Ай-Петри, и над ними, как дым, струились к
зениту и таяли облака.
