Города являлись центрами развития культуры: там открывались школы и развивались ремесла, появлялись мастера самых различных специальностей. В города приезжали торговые люди из других земель, византийские мастера. Каменное строительство, прежде всего церквей, начиналось в городах. Здесь же писались летописи. Грамотность горожан, в основном ремесленников, была выше, чем грамотность сельских жителей. Высокий уровень грамотности горожан подтверждается многими археологическими находками. Берестяные грамоты в большом количестве находят при раскопках Новгорода. На них новгородцы писали друг другу письма, делали хозяйственные заметки, учились писать. Надписи на различных предметах делали ремесленники, девушки подписывали свои веретена. На стенах церквей остались автографы и записи о событиях.
