В 146 году до н.э. огромный приморский мегаполис Карфаген был взят штурмом и полностью разрушен римской армией. Большая часть горожан погибла, выжившие попали в рабство. После того, как в городе стало нечего грабить, римляне вывели из него свои войска и подожгли то, что осталось от Карфагена. Пожары продлились ещё 17 дней, пепелище было засыпано солью (чтобы в этом месте не росли никакие растения) и ритуально проклято римским сенатом. Территория бывшей империи стала римской провинцией Африка со столицей в Уттике — городе, сразу после высадки римлян перешедшем на их сторону
