Поддержку войску Ганнибала оказали галлы, не так давно побежденные римлянами. В 217 и 216 годах его войско несколько раз одержало крупные победы над римским. В частности, 80 тысяч римских солдат было уничтожено в легендарном сражении – битве при Каннах.Так или иначе, Ганнибал позволил себе некоторое промедление. Это время помогло римлянам прийти в себя и восстановить силы после ряда проигранных сражений. Затем они ожидаемо начали контрнаступление. Сиракуза и Капуя были ими взяты, и карфагенский полководец никак не смог помешать этому.
