до Октябрьской революции казахи, как и ряд тюркоязычных народов, пользовались письменным, "книжным" языком, именовавшимся то "чагатайским", то "книжно - татарским". Специфика этого письменного "книжного" языка в том, что он в лексическом отношении представлял элементы арабского, персидского и тюркского языков. 
           задолго до Октябрьской революции казахский народ пользовался арабским алфавитом. По мере дальнейшего нарастания темпа всестороннего развития экономики, культуры возникла необходимость перехода к латинизированной письменности. 
                латинизированный алфавит просуществовал с 1929 года до 1940 года. на нем велось обучение школьников, на нем проводилась ликвидаця неграмотности взрослого населения, печатались казахские газеты, журналы и книги. 
          в 1940 году казахский народ переходит к новому алфавиту  на основе русской графики. 
    современный казахский алфавит и орфография на основе русской графики является национальной системой письменности, где максимально учтены специфические особенности родного языка. 
          увеличение количества знаков (букв)  в алфавите идет за счет обозначения специфических фонем казахского языка (ә, ғ,қ,ө,ұ,ү,ң,і,һ). до 1957 года буквы, выражающие специфические для казахского языка фонемы, были расположены в конце всех букв алфавита.
         в 1957 году Указом Президиума Верховного совета Казахской ССР специфические буквы были расположены соответственно после тех букв, на основе которых они образованы
