Hygeia is another name of goddess Athena, the goddess of good health and cleanliness in Greek and Roman mythology. The word “hygiene” comes from her name.

Once one of the workers on the building Parthenon fell down from a great height and was badly injured.

Athena told to Pericles how to help to that worker and after following of her recommendations the man felt well again.  

The goddess Hygeia was shown holding a cup with a snake around it. The same symbol is an emblem of medicine now.
