Alma-Ata (Kazakh. Almaty, Almaty (inf.) [6]; until 1921 - Verny) - a city of republican significance and the largest settlement of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the former capital of Kazakhstan (until 1997), the Kazakh SSR (as part of the USSR), Kazakh ASSR (as part of the RSFSR).

According to ancient monuments discovered by archaeologists in the territory of modern Almaty, it can be judged that this area has long been inhabited by nomadic and semi-settled tribes. The most characteristic monuments of this region are the Saks burial mounds of the VI — III centuries BC. e., the largest of which are up to 20 m high and with a base diameter of more than 100 m, were located on the banks of the rivers Bolshaya and Malaya Almatinok, Esentaya (Vesnovki), Aksaya.
