It was opened on January 30, 1952 as part of the Kurskaya – Belorusskaya section. It is named after Komsomolskaya Square, under which it is located. It has a transition to the Komsomolskaya station of the Sokolnicheskaya line.

It is one of the busiest metro stations in Moscow (mainly because of the stations located near the Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazan stations). According to the data for 2014, the average passenger traffic at the station amounted to 163 thousand people per day.
