Sir David Attenborough
Sir David Attenborough is probably the most famous presenter on British television. He has
made wildlife documentaries for the BBC since the 1940s and has travelled to hundreds of
different countries to film interesting and endangered animals. He has swum with dolphins,
ridden on elephants and has sat next to a gorilla in the wild. He also has a famous brother –
the actor and director Sir Richard Attenborough – he played the park developer in the film
Jurassic Park.
Sir David was born in London in 1926 and, after going to university, started his career at the
BBC (the British Broadcasting Corporation) when he was 23. He became a producer and
made quiz shows and music programmes before getting a job as a presenter on ‘Zoo Quest’.
On the programme, Sir David went to Africa with an expedition from London Zoo. They were
trying to catch and film wild animals to take back to zoos and safari parks in Britain.
Since then, Sir David Attenborough has made a lot of TV series. The most well-known was a
series called ‘Life’. It had amazing slow-motion films of animals, including one of flying bats.
He has also written best-selling books and supported environmental charities. And he hasn’t
retired. If he continues to have good health, he will make a new TV series in the new year.
