Жили-были два брата: один богатый, а другой – беднее некуда. Вот пришел бедняк к богачу за помощью, а у того на ту пору одна корова издыхала. Все равно, видно, пропадать ей, вот богач и отдал ее бедному брату: – На! Да отвяжись от меня! Только шкуру, гляди, не вздумай зажилить, потом отдашь! Бедняк думает: «И то хлеб. Шкуру ему верну, так хоть мясо мне останется». Взвалил он коровенку на сани, привез домой да и подумал: «А ну, как я ее выхожу?» Стал он ее выхаживать. Уж так он ее кормил, так с ней возился – отошла коровенка, поправилась, в тело пришла. Да такая дойная оказалась, что молоком хоть залейся! Жалко богатому брату стало – ведь подумать только, невезение какое! Что ни день, то тащится к бедняку и канючит одно и то же: “Отдай шкуру, отдай коровью шкуру!” Бедняк и говорит: – Так ведь она жива и шкура при ней. Вот погоди, сдохнет – тогда и шкура тебе достанется! Богатый брат никаких уговоров слушать не хочет, подавай ему шкуру – и весь разговор. Видят, добром дело не кончить, пошли в суд. Пришли. Один одно толкует, другой – другое. Вот судья и говорит: – Задам я вам каждому по три вопроса. Кто правильно на них ответит – того и дело правое. Ладно. Вот спрашивает судья в первый раз. – Что самое сладкое? Богач отвечает: – Мед в моих ульях. – Вовсе нет! – говорит бедняк. – Сон! – Верно! А кто самый шустрый? – Тот, кто быстрее всех деньги копит! – А вот и нет! – говорит бедняк. – Ум завистника. Он ни днем, ни ночью покоя не знает. – Верно! А кто самый несчастливый? – Да тот, кто вроде меня просчитался: лучшую дойную корову брату-мошеннику своими руками отдал! – А вот и нет! – смеется бедный брат. – Тот, кто сам перед судьей проговорился, что отдал брату не коровью шкуру, а дойную корову. Вот судья и говорит: – Ты, бедный брат, правильно ответил, – твоя и корова! Чему учит эта сказка?
