Turtles are one of four modern groups of reptiles, whose fossil remains can be traced for more than 220 million years. The detachment contains about 328 modern species, grouped into 14 families and two sub-orders. Ecological turtles are divided into marine and terrestrial, and terrestrial, in turn, into terrestrial and freshwater.
