 В атмосфере «темного царства», под гнетом самодурной силы тускнеют, чахнут живые человеческие чувства, слабеет воля, меркнет разум. Если же человек наделен энергией, жаждой жизни, то, применяясь к обстоятельствам, он начинает лгать, хитрить, изворачиваться.

Под давлением этой темной силы развиваются характеры Тихона и Варвары. И уродует их эта сила — каждого на свой лад.

Тихон подавлен, жалок, обезличен. Но даже гнет Кабанихи не убил в нем окончательно живые чувства. Гдето в глубине его робкой души теплится огонек — любовь к жене. Он не смеет проявлять эту любовь, он не понимает сложной душевной жизни Катерины и рад уехать даже от нее, лишь бы вырваться из домашнего ада. Но огонек в его душе не гаснет. Растерянный и подавленный, Тихон проявляет любовь и жалость к изменившей ему жене. «А я ее люблю, мне ее жаль пальцем тронуть…» — признается он Кулигину.

4. Nowadays it seems so obvious that our homes are equipped with gas, water, vacuum cleaner, electric cooker, microwave oven or refrigerator.
5. These and hundreds of other gadgets make our life more convenient, safer, more enjoyable and give us more leisure.
6. Actually technology helps us in many ways.
7. The production of food, clothes and household equipment is much easier, the treatment of diseases is more effective, and thanks to plans and cars travelling is much faster.
8. People simply cannot imagine their lives without the media, the internet, computers and mobile phones.
9. Thus, technology provides benefits for all people.
10. On the other hand, we have to use it carefully because the same inventions which save human life and improve the world can also be used to produce dangerous weapons or chemicals which may threaten our planet.
11. Another problem that the “the machine age” has brought us is pollution and waste disposal.
12. The development of nuclear power, pesticides and the plastic industry greatly pollute the environment.
13. Moreover, we are helped by so many machines that we have become lazy and lead an unhealthy way of life.
14. We cannot do without cars which take us everywhere quickly and easily but at the same time pollute the atmosphere.
15. On the other hand, having access to a keyboard and computer, a printer and a telephone link some people do not even have to leave their homes to do their daily work and communicate with the world outside, which in turn may lead to isolation and frustration.
16. Still, using modern technologies more people are living now in more comfort, health and prosperity than ever before.
17. At the same time, it is the responsibility of all people as well as scientists to detect, prevent and control and potential hazards.
