The dombra is one of the oldest instruments. It is a two-stringed plucked musical instrument. The dombra is used as accompanying, solo and main instrument in the Kazakh traditional music. It sounds slowly and softly. The sound is produced by beating of the arm or mediator.

The history of this instrument's origin goes into the depth of centuries. Usually the dombra has two strings, but a three and four-stringed dombra also can be found in the eastern parts of Kazakhstan. The dombra has three parts: body, neck and head. The body of the instrument is called shanak. It plays the role of sound intensifier. There are two types of dombra: western and eastern. The neck of western dombra is thin and long. Different shapes of the instrument were caused by the features of performance traditions. The bigger dombra is, the louder it sounds.

The importance of the instrument in the culture of Kazakhstan was marked by initiating the Dombra Day in 2018. The National Dombra Day is celebrated in Kazakhstan every first Sunday of July.
