И действительно, комары как будто специально созданы только для того, чтобы нам досаждать. А когда стало известно, что они отвечают за передачу огромного числа заболеваний, комар и вовсе стал казаться настоящим проклятием.

Между тем комары — необходимый компонент природного равновесия, и как их ни ругай, но об их исчезновении мы пожалели бы еще горше. Дело в том, что крохотные комары — это звенья более крупной системы, биоценоза. А здесь все имеет значение: и атмосфера, и водный режим, и почва, и микроорганизмы, и животные. Стоит исключить одно из звеньев, и пострадают все последующие, нарушится равновесие в природе. Например, в Арктике, где коротким холодным летом гнездится большинство северных птиц, комариные личинки зачастую оказываются единственным источником их прокорма. Но и те комары и личинки, которым удалось не стать пищей птиц или рыб, все равно проживут недаром. Мириады насекомых переносят в своих тельцах тонны химических элементов: углерод, азот, фосфор, кальций, железо, марганец, молибден, бор, — что так необходимы растениям. Предполагают, что комариные тучи — порой единственный биологический транспорт для некоторых микроэлементов, без которых теряют силу и травинки, и могучие деревья.

Перенося инфекции, комары служат важнейшим стабилизатором экосистем, поскольку регулируют численность популяций животных, как и хищники.
