Kazakhstan is a state in central Asia. It occupies the 9th place in square among other countries, is populated by 18 096 000 people and is politically a mixed republic. The state language is Kazakh, whereas Russian is an official language. Kazakh capital used to be Almata, however nowadays it is Astana, a city in the middle of the country. Kazakhstan has frontiers with Russia in the north, China in the east, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in the south. The European part of the land is bordered by the Caspian sea in the west. There are a lot of steppy plains in the country and some mountain chains in the south-west. In terms of history, Kazakhstan belonged to the Golden Horde. Later it split into a separate Kazakh khanate. It stayed so until this territory entered Russia in XVII century. Kazakhstan became independent on the 16 December of 1991. It has since developed into a well-being democratic state, which plays an important role in the region.
