A. Morning, Kostya!
B. Hello, Dima!
A. What are you doing at the weekend? Do you want to go to the country for the day?
B. I’d love to, but I have to help my mother in the house.
A. What, are you employed as the charlady?
B. Very funny! I just have some jobs to do, that’s all. My mother’s tired after working all week, so she needs a bit of a rest on her day off. It’s never a complete rest for her, of course, but I do a certain amount. I’m the man of the house, after all. I think a man should take on some of the responsibility – it’s his job!
A. Fine speech! And what exactly are these jobs?
B. My first one, as my mother keeps saying, is to study hard. But at home, well, nobody’s pushing me into it, but I reckon it’s my job to tidy my room every day and clean the flat once a week.
A. Well, of course, to make your bed, not to leave your clothes lying all over the place even if it is your own room, that’s obvious. But washing the dishes – is that really a man’s job?
B. For some reason, washing dishes is considered infra dig for a man usually. That’s just prejudice! When I tidy the kitchen, I think how delighted my mother will be to get home and see the washing-up done, and the sink tidy.
A. Maybe you even do the shopping?
B. Why not? Getting the bread, milk and potatoes – that’s my job, too. Especially when the shops are nearby. I can do all that on the way home from school.
A. Who does the rest of the shopping?
В. We usually make an expedition to the market once a week. Mum buys the meat, cereal, eggs and so on, and I act as porter.
A. So what are you doing today?
B. Just the usual clean-up. Carpets, floors. And I help mother with the linen washing. You know, a friend of mine once told me that doing the laundry was really heavy work and should be done by men.
A. Well, I wash my own socks.
B. Socks – that’s nothing. I once made my own dinner – that was really something. Because I can’t really cook. Can you?
A. Just make tea and maybe fry an egg. Nothing else.
B. Well, in that case I’m a clear winner in the domestic stakes. I can take my shoes to be repaired, mend a fuse, put up a bookshelf and take out the rubbish.
A. You may be right, mending a fuse or a tap in the bathroom really is a man’s job.
B. Now we understand each other! Listen, what about going out this evening? I think I’ll be finished by three o’clock.
A. Fine. See you then.
