Crops.
By the word crop we understand every useful plant cultivated for the benefit of mankind.
Depending upon their field of application, crops can be subdivided into the following groups:
1) Food crops, comprising mainly cereals, or grain crops. Wheat is considered to be the main food crop. It is followed by rye grown essentially in Northern countries. Wheat and rye are used for baking bread, etc. Buck wheat and millet are being developed for making gruels. Oats has always been employed for feeding domestic animals. Oats ais an excellent feed for horses, cows, growing calves and laying hens on account of their high protein content. So oats is considered to be a typical feed or kind of fodder. The same can be said of maize (corn in the USA) which is known to be a foodstuff and a means of fattening cattle.
2) Feed crops are those the main purpose of which is to supply provender to cattle. Many varieties of grasses are being cultivated for this purpose, clover taking the first place. Timothy, alfalfa, vetch, swedes and mangel are also important crops.
3) Industrial crops are those that provide raw materials for further processing. Sugar – beet is important for sugar industry. Flax, hemp, cotton are used in light industry.
