Своим рождением вальс обязан многим танцам разных народов Европы. Корни его находятся в популярном для своего времени танце «матеник» и его разновидности «фуриантэ», исполняемых на праздниках в чешской деревне, во французском танце «вольт» («лавольта») и, наконец, в австрийском «лендлере», самом близком к вальсу из его предшественников.

Есть мнение, что предшественником вальса является французский средневековый танец вольс. Начинался он чем-то вроде польки, но через несколько тактов кавалер должен был приподнять свою даму, продолжая крутить её. Вольс танцевали при французском дворе, пока Людовик XIII не наложил запрет на него.

Родиной Вальса по праву считают Германию и Австрию.

В XIX и начале XX веков существовало несколько различных форм вальса, включая некоторые с размером 2/4, 6/8 и 5/4.

Вальс — одно из искусств выразительных движений в ритме 3/4.
