Many people confuse the words Great Britain and the United Kingdom. The full name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is situated on the British Islands in the north-west of Europe. The United Kingdom consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It also has 14 British overseas territories all around the world in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

The capital and the largest city of the United Kingdom is London which stands on the River Thames. It’s the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. Other major cities include Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester.

The head of the State is the Queen but the Prime Minister actually rules the country. The UK Parliament consists of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Few people know that the House of Commons is the only place in Great Britain that a king or a queen can’t enter.

There aren’t very high mountains and long rivers in the United Kingdom. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis (1344) and the longest river is the Severn. The United Kingdom is famous for its lakes. Loch Ness is the most popular of them.

You can’t imagine England without fog. People often take umbrellas when they go out. Actually it is not so rainy in Great Britain as you think it is. However the rain can start without any warning and then suddenly stop. Such unpredictable weather is a common topic in Englishmen’s conversations.
