Christopher Columbus was an Italian trader and explorer. He was born in 1451 in Genoa. His father was a wool weaver who also owned a cheese stand at which young Christopher worked as a helper. Columbus completed his formal education at an early age and began sailing on trading trips. In the 1480s he began a campaign to reach Asia by travelling west. In 1492 Columbus landed on a small island in the Caribbean Sea that he called San Salvador. He was certain that he had arrived in the East Indies and dubbed the natives Indians. Leaving San Salvador Columbus travelled along the coast of Cuba and Haiti. Columbus made three more journeys to the New World during his life searching for the mainland of Asia. In 1502 he made a last-ditch effort to find Asia. The company travelled along the coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. In 1504 Columbus returned to Spain and died two years later still believing he had found a water route to Asia.
