Washington-city, capital of the United States of America. The official name - District of Columbia, is an independent territory that is not part of any one of the states. The city was founded in 1791 and named in honor of George Washington, the first U.S. president. Since 1871, Washington, along with Georgetown and several other areas merged in District of Columbia (English District of Columbia, abbreviated as DC), whose boundaries coincide with the city, so the Americans not to confuse the city of the same state in the northwest of the country, speaking generally call the city "Dc" or "Washington Dc."

The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River, bordered by Virginia to the southwest, and the State of Maryland with all other parties. The permanent population of the city is 601,723 people, due to arrival of commuters during the week it increased to one million. The population of the Washington metropolitan area, part of which is a city of 5.4 million people, according to this indicator agglomeration ranked eighth in the country.

I think Washington always has a lot of tourist, even if there are many other famous cities. Washington is not a typical American city; it has no skyscrapers , the highest building being the Capitol- the famous sightseeing of Washington. These are a lot of large public gardens, parks. Situated on the Potomac River this city is well to see Lincoln Memorial, the White House with the famous cherry-tree alley. The Library of Congress, wich holds five million books, the National Gallery, etc.
