1. Discussing the price and the way of payment
Borisov: Good morning! I’m Borisov. Here is my card.
Stanley: Glad to meet you, Mr. Borisov. Will you take a seat, please?
Borisov: Thank you.
Stanley: Did you have a good trip?
Borisov: Yes, it was quite nice, thank you.
Stanley: Have you seen any places of interest in London yet?
Borisov: Yes, but not many. I arrived in London only two days ago and it has been raining all the time.
Stanley: Oh, I hope the weather will change for the better and it’ll stop raining soon. You’ll enjoy sightseeing of London. … Well, Mr. Borisov, let’s discuss business now. What can I do for you?
Borisov: You’ve started producing a new model of pumps. The quality of the model meets our requirements and we’d like to place an order with you.
Stanley: Sure.
Borisov: But before signing a Contract I’d like to discuss some points with you. Let’s start with the price. I’m sorry to say that your price is not attractive to us. You have quoted very high price.
Stanley: The prices on the world market for this type of pumps are lower than ours. But we have improved the model, so the price is reasonable.
Borisov: Anyway, I think that the price is a bit high. I’d like to stress that it’s our trial order and if we are satisfied with our transaction, we can repeat orders in future.
Stanley: The fact is our pumps are in great demand. However, we can offer you a discount of 5% off the value of the Contract.
Borisov: Fine. That settles the price problem.
Stanley: And what about the way of payment? I hope payment by a letter of credit against shipping documents will suit you?
Borisov: Yes, it will.
Stanley: So, you will have to open a L/C with Foreign Trade Bank after getting our notification of the readiness of the goods for shipment.
Borisov: OK. Could we meet tomorrow at 10 a.m. to discuss the terms of delivery? Stanley: Fine. Good-bye, Mr. Borisov.
Borisov: Good-bye, Mr. Stanley.
2. Discussing the terms and conditions of delivery
Borisov: Good morning Mr. Stanley.
Stanley: Good morning, Mr. Borisov. Happy to meet you again.
Borisov: The pleasure is mine. Sunny morning isn’t it?
Stanley: Yes, it’s beautiful. Good weather is a good way to start business, isn’t it?
Borisov: That’s true. Let’s get down to business then.
Stanley: How many pumps would you like to buy?
Borisov: We can buy 150 pumps.
Stanley: And when do you require the goods?
Borisov: As soon as possible, say in April.
Stanley: In April? Let me see. I’m afraid, that’s impossible. Our pumps are selling very well, and we are heavy with orders. We can deliver only 50 pumps in April.
Borisov: And what about the other 100 pumps?
Stanley: We can start shipping them six months after we sign the contract. I think we can deliver the pumps in 4 lots of 25 pumps each at regular intervals within 8 months. Is that all right with you?
Borisov: Not altogether. We require the pumps earlier. Could you start delivering, say, 4 months after we sign the Contract?
Stanley: I’m afraid not. However, we can guarantee that there won’t be any delay in shipment.
Borisov: OK. I think we could agree to that.
Stanley: Is there anything else you’d like to discuss Mr. Borisov?
Borisov: Yes, I’d like to clarify the terms of delivery.
Stanley: As we can provide shipping facilities, we usually sell our goods on CIF terms.
Borisov: Well, Mr. Stanley, we can accept your delivery terms. Could we meet tomorrow to discuss the rest points and sign the Contract?
Stanley: I’ve got a crowded program for tomorrow. Can we meet here on Thursday at 3 p.m.?
Borisov: It’ll suit me fine. Good –bye, Mr. Stanley.
Stanley: Good bye, Mr. Borisov.
