(cos(5π/2-α)- sin(α-π/2))(sin(π-α)+cos(3π-α))=(cos(2π+π/2-α)+sin(π/2-α))(sin(π-α)+cos(2π+π-α))=(cos(π/2-α)+sin(π/2-α))(sin(π-α)+cos(π-α))=(sinα+cosα)(sinα-cosα)=sin²α-cos²α=-(cos²-sin²α)=-cos2α=-cos(-π/8×2)=-cos(π/4)=-√2/2

Varfolomey V. Rastrelli was born in 1700 in Russia. He was the son of the famous Italian sculptor Carlo Rastrelli who lived and worked in Russia. The latter was the creator of the famous monument to Peter the Great in St. Petersburg. I. Neelov, V. Stasov, A. Shanelas, Ch.Cameron and D. Quarenghi contributed much to the beauty of the Catherine's Palace in Pushkin and Paul’s Palace in Pavlovsk. Peter the Great was the founder of these marvelous palaces. After his death, his daughter Elizabeth continued to build and reconstruct the palace buildings following the traditions of the Baroque architectural style. V. Rastrelli was the first among them to glorify the power of the Russian state at that time. He added much to the peculiar and successful design of these palaces initially produced by I. Kvasov and S. Chevakinsky. The palaces displayed the skillfulness and originality of the ordinary Russian craftsmen (carpenters, joiners, fitters, bricklayers, plumpers) who erected and decorated these unique diamonds of world architecture. From the windows in front of Catherine’s Palace we observe, admire, and appreciate the extent and beauty of the gardens around the palaces.

We commonly refer to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg as the “pearl” of Russian architecture. It defines the image of the city and makes it recognizable in the world. We see Rastrelli's favourite bright colours-white and light green- on the facade. There is some fine plasterwork in the rooms of the palace. The ceilings are rich in ornamental gold leaves. Spacious dining rooms, dancing halls, bedrooms, reception halls, staircases, and famous enfilades are particular to the Baroque style, which was always rich in various decorative techniques.

V. Rastrelli richly decorated his majestic buildings in Pushkin; the Stroganovs’ Palace; and the building of the Smolny Monastry in St. Petersburg with huge figures of antique heroes on the roofs, beautiful paintings and carpets. The remarkable Amber Chamber in Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin is absolutely gorgeous in design. Millions of tourists come to Rastrelli’s palaces annually. They admire their outstanding collections of sculpture, pottery, paintings, clocks, etc. The Winter Palace is a superb work by Rastrelli, created at the peak of his talent. It maintains its elegance. The overall effect is monumental and highly artistic.

St. Petersburg greatly profits from having buildings by the classical architects V. Rastrelli, V. Kazakov, V. Stasov, Ch. Cameron and Carlo Rossi.
