Закон постоянства состава сформулировал Ж.Пруст в 1808 году: все вещества имеют постоянный качественный и количественный состав независимо от способа их получения.

Позже закон был уточнен, что справедлив для веществ с молекулярным строением.

Данный закон позволяет выводить формулы химических веществ.
