Jim and Della were two young people, husband and wife. They lived each other dearly. They lived in a small room in an old house in one of the dirty streets of New York. They worked from early morning till late at night, but they got very little money for their work. And still they had two things which were very dear to them – Jim`s gold watch and Della`s beautiful hair. Christmas was coming and Della`s wanted to give Jim a nice present, bet she had no money. She really did not know what to do. She sat on the sofa and began to cry. Suddenly an idea came to her. She got up and stood in front of the mirror and looked at her beautiful long hair. Then she left the house and in a few minutes she was already at the hairdresser is shop. «Will you buy my hair?» she asked. The hairdresser looked at her hair and said, «Yes, I will. It is fine hair. I can give you twenty dollars for it» Della was very happy. She took the money and went to buy a present for her husband. In one of the shops she saw a very beautiful watch-chain. «I will buy it, Jim will be very glad» she said to herself. «He needs a chain for his watch». So Della ought a gold watch-chain as a Christmas present for Jim. When she got home, Jim was already there waiting for her. He looked at his smiling little wife and understood everything. «Why did you do it?» he asked. «Dear Jim, my hair will grow and I wanted to give you a present. Here it is,» and she put the watch-chain into his hand. The beautiful chain, Della`s present, was of no use to him. He had sold his gold watch to buy a Christmas present for his wife. He took a packet out of his pocket and gave it to Della. She opened it and saw two beautiful combs, the combs, that she had seen in a shop window and had wanted for so long.

For me Christmas always began in the middle of the cold, windy month of November. My sister Alison and me sat down at the fire and wrote a letter to Father Christmas telling him about all the presents we wanted. We addressed our letters to "Father Christmas, the North Pole". With December our excitement grew each day - we opened the calendar, Christmas cards arrived in the post, Christmas lights in the streets, the town carol ser- vice. And, of course, snow everywhere. On Christmas Eve, the whole family helped to deco- rate the house, put up the Christmas tree and the decora- tions and blow up the balloons. Then in the afternoon. when my auntie Kathleen and my two cousins arrived everything was ready. Before we went to bed, we left some brandy and mince pies for Father Christmas and then put our stockings at the end of our beds. We tried to stay awake as long as pos sible to see Father Christmas, but the next thing we knew was morning. Christmas morning! At the bottom of the bed there was the stocking, now full of all kinds of small presents and sweets, and at the bottom a chocolate sixpence and a tangerine. Christmas morning was bright and sunny and, after church, my cousin David and I went out into the garden to play with our new presents. Lunch was always late, but what a lunch! Roast turkey with all the vegetables fol lowed by Christmas pudding and brandy butter. When we pulled the crackers, the dog barked; we took our plastic toys, laughed at the jokes, put on the silly paper hats and laughed again. After lunch the adults slept on the sofas in front of the Queen's speech on television while we all played cards. Then we had tea, with a huge Christmas cake covered with a snowman and polar bears. It didn't seem possible, but we carried on eating. By bedtime all of the children were exhausted. As soon as we turned off the light, we all fell into a deep sleep.
